Interactions between the summer mean monsoon and the intraseasonal oscillation in the Indian monsoon region

چکیده
[1] The relationship between interannual variations of the seasonal mean monsoon and intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) during boreal summer over the Indian monsoon region is investigated. The result shows a negative correlation between all-India summer monsoon rainfall and the ISO intensity. It is argued that the negative correlation is primarily attributed to the impact of the mean state of Indian summer monsoon on ISO. A strong Indian monsoon leads to the weakening of convection over the equatorial eastern Indian Ocean. The latter may further suppress the eastward and northward propagating ISO variances over the Indian Ocean and lead to a weakened intraseasonal activity over the Indian monsoon region. The ISO may feed back to the Indian summer mean monsoon through nonlinear eddy momentum transport. In addition, the ISO intensity over India increases (decreases) during the ENSO developing (decaying) summers. Citation: Qi, Y., R. Zhang, T. Li, and M. Review of Advance in Research on Asian Summer Monsoon
The Asian monsoon is the most significant component of the global climate system. During recent two decades, concerned efforts have been made to investigate the Asian monsoon. A substantial achievement has been made in basic physical processes, predictability and prediction since the MONEX of 1978-79. The major advance in our understanding about of the variability of the Asian summer monsoon ha...
متن کاملNorthern Hemisphere Summer Monsoon Singularities and Climatological Intraseasonal Oscillation
Using climatological pentad mean outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts analysis winds, the authors show that the Northern Hemisphere summer monsoon displays statistically significant climatological intraseasonal oscillations (CISOs). The extreme phases of CISO characterize monsoon singularities—monsoon events that occur on a fixed pentad with us...
متن کاملPotential predictability and extended range prediction of Indian summer monsoon breaks
[1] Extended range prediction (two to three weeks in advance) of Indian summer monsoon active (rainy) and break (dry) phases are of great importance for agricultural planning and water management. Using daily rainfall and circulation data for 23 years, a fundamental property of the monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (ISO’s) is discovered and shown that the potential predictability limit ( 20 da...
متن کاملMonsoon Climate Variabilities
The Asian monsoon consists of three subcomponents, Indian monsoon (IM), East Asian monsoon (EAM), and western North Pacific monsoon (WNPM). All these submonsoon systems exhibit remarkable intraseasonal and interannual variabilities. In this chapter, we will review recent progress in understanding the monsoon annual cycle and some of major issues related to the monsoon intraseasonal and interann...
متن کاملEmpirical Prediction and Predictability of Dry and Wet Spells of the Indian Summer Monsoon
Prediction of the active (rainy) and break (dry) phases of the Indian summer monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (ISO’s) two to threeweeks in advance is of great importance for food production and water management of the country, but is currently unavailable. Potential predictability inherent in the quasi-periodic nature of the monsoon ISO’s is estimated from daily rainfall and circulation data ...
